Electrodes for Anion Exchange Membrane electrolysers

Jolt stands out as the go-to electrode supplier for AEM electrolysis.  Anion Exchange Membrane electrolysers have different requirements to traditional Alkaline Water Electrolysers.  Whilst using similar catalysts the structure of the electrode is often much more complex.  This is due to the higher targeted current densities and the resultant higher amounts of gas generation.

Nickel Foam is a good choice for AEM due to its high inherent surface area and porosity, it is also relatively low cost and quite abundantly available.  Downsides to using Nickel Foam are the potential to form sharp points (at bubble junctions), especially as the electrode starts to degrade, which can cause pinpricks in the membrane and the possibility of over compression resulting in the structure collapsing.

Nickel Felts are potentially a better option for AEM due the flat surface facing the membrane, the high porosity and thin nature of the material.  The downside here is that Nickel Felts are, today, a lot more expensive.

Complex structures like Nickel Foams or Nickel Felts can be problematic to coat with catalysts using traditional coating techniques.  Jolt’s Sparkfuze™ coating technique is particularly good at coating these materials.  Jolt has already signed a long term supply agreement with Ansaldo Green Tech and has recieved multiple positive test results from various stack manufacturers.

Jolt’s anode has been selected for a number of projects and is applicable to all systems.  Jolt’s cathode is primarily designed for those systems using wet cathode set up.  Produced using our patented Sparkfuze™ process, these electrodes offer high efficiency and durability. The process also means faster production at lower cost.

Available in bulk supply from our pilot line in Barcelona, Spain we are able to support even the largest of producers. Electrodes can be made in any shape and size required and at the volumes needed for large scale production. We are now filling this capacity and are deploying production to strategic areas such as Saudi Arabia, India & Chile. These additional production sites will allow us to not only supply electrodes to OEM electrolyser producers but to support large scale green hydrogen & green ammonia projects where they are being planned.

Jolt signs supply agreement with Ansaldo Green Tech

Jolt Solutions has recently signed a Cooperation Agreement with Ansaldo Green Tech, a division of the Ansaldo Energia Group.

The contract covers the supply of electrodes, a critical component for the manufacture of the Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolyser that Ansaldo Green Tech has developed. The innovative electrolyser, based on 1MW AEM single stack, will be installed in industrial installation for the production of Green Hydrogen.

The collaboration between Ansaldo & Jolt secures an important part of the supply chain for electrolyser manufacturing and helps Ansaldo Green Tech in their plans to deploy 300MW/annum capacity from its production site in Genoa, as part of its IPCEI Project funded by the European Union, Next Generation EU.

Jolt wins “Startup of the Year” at Energy Tech Challengers 2024

Energy Tech Challengers is an annual event that brings together innovative companies working on solutions to decarbonize the planet and connects them with leading venture capitalists, corporations, and media voices.

In 2024 Energy Tech Challengers invited companies to apply if they are working on technology solutions in the areas of green energy infrastructure, battery value chain, green molecules, or climate fintech.

The focus was on the most pressing net zero challenges and recognizing innovators with scalable and equitable solutions that have the potential to reach gigaton impact.

Over 450 companies entered the event after being nominated by VC’s, from these 50 finalists were selected and invited to present their technology at the event in Bilbao.  The companies were judged by a panel of 20+ VC’s.

Companies were categorised as follows:

Of the 5 catergory winners, Jolt Solutions was selected as the overall winner taking home the trophy.

Jolt’s electrodes for alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) and AEM electrolysis, and the uniquely scalable production technique were viewed by the judges to have the most potential impact for decarbonisation.

We would like to congratulate the catorgory winners and thank the judges for awarding Jolt the overall prize.

Jolt Solutions at the World Electrolysis Congress 2024

Jolt Solutions was delighted to take part in the World Electrolysis Congress this week in Dusseldorf.

The event was well attended and featured a number of highly interesting talks on electrolyer technology, policy and future developments.

Jolt received a number of interesting contacts and was involved in a variety of commercial conversations.
