Marine applications: chlorination and corrosion resistance

In marine environments, the most common antifouling system is electrochemical generation of hypochlorite directly from seawater. This technology, known as MGPS (Marine Growth Prevention System), prevents biofilm formation in water intakes, cooling pipes and hulls.

The challenge: corrosion

Seawater is corrosive due to its content of chlorides, sulphates and dissolved oxygen. A conventional electrode loses its coating in under 12 months. Our SPARKFUZE™ MAR-T anodes exceed 5 years under real conditions thanks to:

  • Grade 1 titanium substrate with reinforced passivation.
  • Intermediate TaO₂-rich layer acting as a diffusion barrier.
  • Mixed Ru/Ir/Ta coating optimised for selectivity and lifetime.

Result: fewer maintenance shutdowns and compliance with IMO ballast water regulation.
