The chemistry behind AEM electrodes
AEM electrodes operate at a complex interface: catalyst, polymer ionomer and membrane. Performance depends less on the catalyst itself and more on how the triple boundary (gas-liquid-solid) is built.
Critical variables
- Catalyst particle size: 3-8 nm to maximise active area without losing electrical connectivity.
- Ionomer loading: 25% to 40% by weight, balancing ionic transport and gas blockage.
- Hydrophobicity: essential to avoid flooding at high current densities.
At Jolt Solutions we formulate each catalyst-ionomer pair specifically for the customer's stack module. Standard PEM recipes rarely work in AEM without deep reformulation.
