Platinum group metals are one of the critical chokepoints of the energy transition. Over 80% of global iridium comes from South Africa, and growing demand from the PEM sector threatens to strain prices and availability.
Three reasons to reduce PGM
- Resilience: diversifying the chain avoids dependence on a single geographic supplier.
- Environmental footprint: 1 kg of refined iridium emits ~10 t CO₂eq; nickel-molybdenum, ~30 kg.
- Cost: iridium price multiplied by 5 between 2019 and 2022.
