PGM-free cathodes: reducing the cost of green hydrogen

Platinum, iridium and ruthenium (the platinum group metals or PGM) are excellent catalysts, but their cost and volatility weigh on the economics of green hydrogen. In a PEM electrolyser, PGM can account for up to 15% of total CAPEX.

The Jolt alternative

Our PGM-free cathodes are based on nickel-molybdenum alloys and cobalt compounds, highly nanostructured through our patented SPARKFUZE™ process. The results are consistent:

  • Cathodic overpotential below 70 mV @ 0.2 A/cm² in 30% KOH.
  • Demonstrated durability of 25,000 hours in a pilot stack.
  • 60% electrode CAPEX reduction vs. the PGM benchmark.

The outcome: competitive green hydrogen, untied from precious-metal market volatility.
