The green hydrogen economy in Europe 2026
Green hydrogen remains more expensive than grey (~5-7 €/kg vs. 1.5-3 €/kg), but the gap is narrowing. Three factors drive Europe's economics in 2026:
- IPCEI subsidies: over 5 billion euros approved between 2023 and 2025.
- ETS scheme: the CO₂ cost exceeds 95 €/t, making grey H₂ more expensive.
- Mandatory industrial demand: the RED III directive requires refineries and ammonia producers to use green H₂.
Geography
Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and France account for 70% of the announced capacity in Europe. Manufacturing of electrolysers and components (electrodes, membranes, BoP) is growing fast along this axis.
Spain-based Jolt Solutions is positioned to supply this continental demand with short lead times.
