What is advanced alkaline water electrolysis (AWE)?

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is the most mature technology for producing green hydrogen from renewable electricity. Its principle is straightforward: an electric current splits water molecules in an alkaline electrolyte (usually potassium hydroxide) between two submerged electrodes.

Why AWE remains relevant

Compared to newer technologies such as PEM or AEM, AWE offers the best cost-durability trade-off for large projects: it does not require expensive noble metals, the stacks exceed 80,000 hours of service life, and the installed cost per kW is 30% to 50% lower.
